2012 - April Musings

It's starting to feel a lot like summer again and I don't just mean warmer.  The whole pace has picked up with an early invasion of out-of-towners.  Winter just seemed longer last year.

And to make it official, Ben & Jerry's, one of the very few chains allowed in Eastham, reopened for the new season with their traditional Free Cone Day.  When the real Ben & Jerry began franchising, it was written into the agreements that all stores would have a Free Cone Day once a year as a way to give back to its loyal followers.  This year, our little store in Eastham gave out more than 5,653 ice cream cones, many rumored to be to Nauset Regional High School students who tried every flavor.  The most popular one and first to sell out was Triple Caramel Chunk, followed by Coconut Seven-Layer bar, Chocolate and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.  Alas, we got there an hour too late, but at least we didn't have to stand in that line.

Guests and returning guests continue to trickle in from VT, NY, MA, OK, Italy & France filling up most weekends, but our favorite visitor was our son, Doug who spent a week with us.  While most visitors want to immerse themselves in every Cape Cod experience, he's just as content to play old games, teach us new computer tricks or accompany me on errands and walks.  Best birthday present, EVER.

Brewster Herring Run
We did manage to visit the Herring Run and this month's video is from our excursion to the Great Cape Herb farm in Brewster to play with the chickens.  And, on the subject of fowl, a lone wild turkey marching down the side of Rt. 28 on my way to Chatham this week and a motorist's windshield shattered by a large hawk on the way to Hyannis were good reminders of the wildlife who share the Cape with us.
